STOP,

… and smell the roses!

Is this common saying, only about a nice smell and a moment of pause, from your busy day?

Or is there more to it?

That 30-60 seconds you take, to deeply inhale, through the nose, that sweet aroma of a fresh full bloom red rose, can have tremendous health benefits for you.  Just one good sniff has the ability to relieve stress and anxiety, soften grief, calm PTSD, end insomnia, and get you “in the mood”.

Aromatherapy is…

… the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.

A simple smell from the right plant can have profound effects on your physical and emotional health.

As I write this article, I am breathing the sharp smell of eucalyptus, peppermint and a dash of lemon, mixed with the mild smell of coconut oil.  It clears my sinuses and allows me to breath easy.  Its calming, soothing, and has none of the harsh side effects of over-the-counter nasal decongestants.

Did I grow all of those plants? No. But that would be cool to do, one day.  Instead, I simply purchased a small bottle of the essential oil for each plant.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

A while back, I wrote about how essential oils radically improved one little boy’s life. Take a moment, and read that story now.

Three exceptionally good essential oil companies, whose products I have used, are:

How can smelling flowers have an effect on the body?

The molecules of essential oils work when they are inhaled because, aromatic molecules interact with the surface of your nasal cavity. And by tiny olfactory nerves located in the roof of the inner nose, these aromatic molecules are transmitted to the part of the brain called the limbic system.

The limbic system interacts to control the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress level and hormone balance. This is why essential oils have such a powerful effect on our moods and general state of mind.

— from “How does Aromatherapy Work?

Essential Oil Diffuser

Hundreds of essential oils are available for use in aromatherapy.  There are specific oils that help with every kind of physical ailment,

  • from headache (chamomile, lavender, and peppermint)
  • to athlete’s foot (tea tree and geranium).

Then there are aromatherapy oils for emotional and mental issues, such as

  • depression (jasmine and lavender)
  • and poor memory (rosemary).

Inhaled essential oils are truly miraculous healing tools.  They solve the problem and improve your over all health and well-being, all with no negative side-effects.

But wait! Before you run to the store and stock up on essential oils, please remember, like anything else, you need to know what you’re doing.  Which is why I strongly recommend finding a certified aroma therapist.

I always want to work with someone who has been properly trained.  The field of aromatherapy has two organizations that can help you find an excellent well trained aroma therapist –

Both of these organizations have links on their home pages, to help you find an aroma therapist near you.

When we began this journey into Holistic Healthcare, I mentioned that we would look at various dimensions of holistic healthcare, and some of the modalities of each dimension.  This article concludes our look at the Body Chemical dimension.  We have looked at vitamins, minerals, herbology, homeopathy, and aromatherapy.  Next time we will begin our look at the Body Mechanical.

I have this plant. It is known to be poisonous. Swallow one bit of it, and you could be looking at nausea, vomiting, paralysis, breathing problems, heart problems and yes, even death.

Aconite Flower

Aconite Flower

With that grim picture, why would I ever want to put such a thing into my mouth?

In 1796, Samuel Hahnemann did something crazy. He eat some bark from the cinchona plant. At the time, this plant was being used to cure people of malaria. But Samuel didn’t have malaria. A strange thing happened. He started shivering, developed a fever, and had pain in his joints. These are all symptoms of malaria.

Cinchona Tree

Cinchona Tree

This got Samuel thinking. Why would a substance that is know to cure some illness, cause the same symptoms as that illness? The more interesting question that Samuel then asked is – would a substance that causes symptoms of some illness cure that illness? The answer is yes, at the correct dilution.

Many of the plant and animal parts used in homeopathic products are very unsafe in their raw form. But when diluted down to 1 part per million, they can become safe and actually helpful for healing. Often homeopathic ingredients are diluted much further. In one of the products I frequently use, some of the ingredients are diluted to 1 part per 10288Down at these levels, there isn’t even a single molecule of the original substance left in the bottle of liquid. If there’s nothing left of the substance, how can it do any good?

Thanks for asking.  Cue the Twilight Zone music.

The answer lies in electo-magnatism, and in a very special property of water.

Let’s start with the fact that things in the universe have a resonant frequency – an inherent vibration.  Albert Einstein said, “Everything in Life is Vibration”.  In fact, different things in the universe have different resonant frequencies.  The original plant or animal part that was diluted to make the homeopathic solution had a specific frequency.  As the homeopathic product is made, through dilution and shaking, this frequency gets imprinted into the water (or alcohol). Down at the dilution levels where there are no molecules of the original substance left in the liquid, the only thing left is this frequency. It is this frequency in the water that provides the healing power of homeopathy.

Resonant Frequency

Sounds a bit crazy, I know.  But very cool!

In an article, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in 1894,  the author writes:

If homeopathy is right, a very large majority of physicians are mistaken. As a class they can have no possible object for opposing homeopathy except a firm belief that it is radically wrong. If homeopathy is wrong, thousands of our citizens are deluded and defrauded by this form of quackery.

Do homeopathic products work?  They do for me!

All Flu

All Flu

One homeopathic product that I never want to run out of is All Flu. Called the ultimate flu remedy, this wonderful product has halted more colds and flu’s for me than I can count.  At the first sign of a soar throat, I’ll use this product, and the next morning, no more soar throat.  If I wait too long, and the cold/flu has already begun, this product brings me through the stages so much faster than without it.

I have used several of the homeopathic Neuro-Emotional Remedies, such as #1 for the Bladder, and #5 for the Large Intestines. There is no doubt in my mind that 5 drops of these products, properly taken each day for a month or two, has had profound effects on my health.

Neuro-Emotional Remedies

Neuro-Emotional Remedies

As always, please follow the advice of a trained homeopathist.  When you do, you are likely to hear the following rules for the use of homeopathic products.

  1. nothing to eat or drink at least 15 minutes before or after putting the homeopathic product in your mouth.  Doing so can prevent the product from working.
  2. place the product (assuming it is to be ingested) under the tongue.  This allows the product to easily enter the blood stream, through the veins under the tongue.
  3. if the product is in the form of pellets to be ingested, do not touch them. The homeopathic remedy was sprayed on the outside of the pellets and can easily be rubbed off.

Homeopathic products have been used to promote healing for over 200 years.  In my opinion, one would be wise to employ this power for your own health.

The temperature is perfect.  The birds are singing. A light breeze blows by.  Its beautiful out here.  There are so many plants, trees and flowers.

path-through-the-woods-bluebells-2-13

I’ve been walking for hours.  About 2 hours ago the head ache started. Now, my head is throbbing with every step.  And my legs haven’t seen this much exercise since… well, never!

If only… is that…? Yes, its a birch tree.  Good thing I took that course in herbology.

A few minutes later I’m sipping on some lovely birch bark tea. The head ache is almost gone, and my leg muscles are feeling so much better.

Herbalism (aka herbology or herbal medicine) is the use of plants for medicinal purposes. This is nothing new. In fact, its roots (pun intended) date back to the beginning of humankind. The first written record of herbs used as medicine dates back to over 5000 years ago, in ancient Mesopotamia.

Today, over 120 different drugs are derived from plants. For example Sennosides, a laxative, comes from the fruit, leaves and bark of the canafistula tree.  Unfortunately, I don’t have one of these growing in my back yard.

Canafistula Tree

Canafistula Tree

Given the choice between an all natural plant and a chemically synthesized drug, I’ll take the plant. You may recall, that vitamins and minerals in nature always come packaged together with everything our bodies need to use them. This is also the case with herbal supplements made exclusively from the plant.

In that article about vitamins and minerals, we also talked about how the soil in the U.S. today, is nutrient impoverished. This means that herbal supplements are not all created equal. Before I pop an herbal supplement in my mouth, I’d like to be sure it is high quality, and worth the money I’m paying for it.

So where should I buy my herbal supplements from?

In my humble (and experienced) opinion, the top two companies for herbal supplements are Premier Research Labs and Standard Process. Both of these companies go through incredible lengths to ensure their products are made from the best herbs possible on the planet. Standard Process grows their own plants. They control their process from seed to bottled supplements. Premier travels the globe to get the best plants possible. Both companies perform frequent clinical testing on their products to ensure the highest quality is maintained.

Standard Process Fields

Standard Process Fields

With this tremendous level of quality comes a small catch. Both Premier and Standard Process will only sell their products to qualified herbal practitioners. This is inconvenient for me at times. I like to order things on the web and have them shipped to me. At the same time, I find it very reassuring. These companies value the quality of their products so highly, that they go the extra mile to ensure that quality, all the way into my mouth. Ok, maybe just into my hands.

As much as I love both of these companies (and they have not paid me a penny to say that … yet), I often purchase herbal products from other companies as well.

There are several products that I use on a regular basis, that I get from Dr. Schultz. I can order his products on the web and have them shipped directly to my door. When I want something right now, my local health food store carries NOW and Solaray – both excellent companies with excellent products.

I am sure there are many more companies making excellent herbal products. The ones I have mentioned, I have personally used.

If you want to purchase from Premier or Standard Process, you’ll need to find an approved herbal practitioner. Both companies can provide you a list of practitioners in your area.

To learn more about herbology or to find an herbologist, I like to start with the schools that teach this modality of holistic healthcare.

According to the Education Portal, the 2 best herbology schools in the U.S. are Bastyr University in Washington State, and Maryland University of Integrative Health in Maryland. The education portal lists several additional excellent schools for herbalism.

college-photo

In the world of academia, there are accrediting organizations that say, “yes this school is teaching correct information”.  The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, establishes requirements for schools teaching herbalism.

Let’s take this even further.

Many professions have certifying organizations that say “yes, this person knows what they’re doing”.  The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) requires applicants to pass rigorous exams in order to become certified.

Just in case that isn’t enough…

The NCCAOM is accredited by the National Commission for Certification Agencies (NCCA) – an accrediting organization, indirectly established by the federal government.

Occasionally I meet people who tell me there is no validity to herbal healthcare.  I bet you’ve meet those people too.  With everything you now know, it won’t be hard for you to thank them for their opinion and walk away (with a smile on your face).

“Lay down face up, and extend your right arm above you”, the Holistic Healthcare provider told me.

He takes my hand and turns it so my palm is parallel to my body, as I lie on the comfortable table.

“I’m going to push your arm forward [towards my feet], I want you to resist my push.”

He is pushing on my arm, up by my wrist, with his right hand.  With his left hand, he proceeds to gently press on different spots on my body, from my head all the way down to my thighs.  With each press on a spot, he pushes on my extended arm.

Sometimes I can resist his push completely. No problem. He’s only pushing my arm with 2 fingers. Come on now, what’s so difficult?

But other times, I can’t resist at all. WTF? I realize I’m a 195 lb. weakling [back when I started on this journey, not now]. But really? Two fingers?

“What are you doing?” I ask, with a definite “what kind of magic is this” tone in my voice.

“I’m checking every organ in your body, verifying each is functioning properly” he says.

Wow!! That sounds amazing (and a bit unbelievable).  “You can do that?” I think to myself.

Arm Muscle Testing Applied Kinesiology

Arm Muscle Testing
Applied Kinesiology

Dr. George Goodheart, DC (a Doctor of Chiropractic) is credited with having discovered:

the dysfunction of a muscle could often times be related to an imbalance in the classic chiropractic protocols of neurolymphatic, neurovascular, and muscle origin and insertion reflexes.

In English, that says, a weak muscle can be a good indicator that something else in your body is not functioning properly.  He discovered this in 1964, more than 50 years ago!  Why am I just hearing about it now?

This process of testing muscle strength while stressing organs (pressing on the right spots), he named Applied Kinesiology.  It is also referred to as muscle testing.

According to the definition, any major muscle can be used. The most common are the arm and leg.  With leg muscle testing, I have been told, while laying on my back, to hold one leg out about 30 degrees while the practitioner pushes on my leg towards center.  Again I need to resist her push.

Another muscle test often used, introduces a slightly new topic: Bi-Digital O-Ring Testing, or B.D.O.R.T. (pronounced B-DORT). The person being tested makes a circle with their thumb and a finger, either the index or middle finger.  The practitioner, using very little force, will now attempt to pull those fingers apart.

Bi-Digital O-Ring Testing (B.D.O.R.T.)

Bi-Digital O-Ring Testing (B.D.O.R.T.)

Notice that the practitioner is using both of his hands attempting to move your two fingers.  Therefore, he will often tell you the spots on your own body to press, which you can do with your other hand. Alternatively a 3rd person can be involved.  The assistant can either touch you with one hand and make the O-Ring for you with their other hand, or they can be the one to press the spots on your body.

Check out this video, regarding a Holistic Healthcare modality called QRA, for a demonstration of BDORT.

BDORT is basically another muscle test, but with some heightened sensitivities.  It has been proven to be highly reliable and accurate.

These testing techniques require 2 people to be involved – the person being tested, and the practitioner doing the testing.  There is a variant of BDORT which can be used for self-testing (read about it, about 2/3 down this web page).

All of these techniques are used for testing the functionality of various parts of the human body.  They are also used to determine, what supplements are good or not good for that body.  Note that this testing answers yes or no, good or not good, for the specific human body being tested.  The results are specific for that person, at the point in time when the testing is done.

In addition to testing if a supplement is beneficial, the same test is used to determine exactly how much of that supplement is needed.  Since the body answers Yes/No questions, the questions “take 1/day?”, “2/day”, etc. is used to determine quantity.

In addition to all of the testing techniques already discussed, there are several others that I have used.  One involves the length of my legs changing as a positive or negative response to a question. Not only has this been done to me, but I have watched my practitioner do this testing on my son. I personally saw his legs change as much as a 1/4-inch.  I realize this one sounds crazy, yet it works.

There is also the lean or sway test.  Simply stand with your feet slightly apart and ask yourself a Yes or No question.  Your body will naturally lean forward for Yes and lean backward for No.  Start with questions you know the answer to, like “My name is {fill-in your name}” for a Yes, and “My name is {fill-in some other name}” for a No.  After some practice, you might want to use this test before purchasing products at the health food store.

Last time, when we discussed Vitamins, Minerals and Herbal Supplements, we ended our conversation with the question “How the F… Am I Supposed to Know Which One to Take?”  Now you know how – test before you buy.

Next time we will begin to look at the dimensions of the human body, what the first dimension is, and basic maintenance in that dimension.

If you have personal experience with these and other Holistic Healthcare testing techniques, please tell us about it in the comment section below.

Vitamins and minerals – the first stop on our journey into the world of Holistic Healthcare.

I can hear every reader yelling back at me,

“Vitamins, minerals – I already take those!”

So did I.

My favorite was FLINTSONES Complete Chewables.

But what was I popping in my mouth, and what happened when I did?

Most vitamin products on the market today, contain synthetic and isolated vitamins.  These are vitamins produced in a laboratory. Mad Scientist ChemistSynthetics come from mixing chemicals together to make the vitamin. Isolated vitamins use chemicals to extract the vitamin molecules from whole foods.

Can my body use these synthetic and isolated vitamins?  In most cases, the sad answer is “With much less efficiency” or a flat out “No!”

In nature, vitamins come packaged with other vitamins, enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants and trace mineral activators required by our bodies, in order to recognize and make use of the vitamin.  Without that whole package, the body may:

  • ignore the isolated vitamin and simply dispose of it, making for expensive urine;
  • store it for future use, until the required other components are available to process it (Excess clutter in the storage compartment can lead to trouble); or
  • take the required components from your body, in order to process the isolated vitamin (Rob Peter to pay Paul).

This is a lot like getting a brand new iPhone 6 with no battery and no charger. Yes it is an iPhone 6, but without those other things, it’s kinda worthless. You might stick it in a draw until you can get a battery and charger; you might throw it away; or you might steal the battery and charger from the twit who gave you this useless gift.

It’s that last choice that makes this isolated vitamin really dangerous.  Your body knows what minerals and enzymes it needs to process the nice new shiny vitamin you just gave it.  So it takes what it needs from the rest of your body, leading to mineral deficiencies, and associated dis-eases.

There are many documented cases of vitamin toxicity (poisoning) caused by isolated and synthetic vitamins.  “In one experiment, synthetic vitamin B (thiamine) was shown to render 100% of a group of pigs sterile!”

Wow, that certainly gives me reason to pause before popping the next multivitamin capsule.

Ok, I got it; I’ll stop eating vitamins.

Wrong decision. Our bodies need vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fatty acids, and more, in order to function. According to Dr. Joel D. Wallach, we require 60 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 amino acids and 2-3 essential fatty acids, every day. (See the YouTube video – Best of Dead Doctors Don’t Lie.)

So what is a person to do? The only solution to this dilemma is to eat whole foods.  That way the body is receiving the full natural vitamin with all of its required companions.

I’m picking up another bag of fresh spinach at the Supermarket, today.  It’ll make me big and strong. (And healthy?) Just look what it does for Popeye.Popeye with Spinach

Yes organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables is definitely the direction to go in.

But sadly its insufficient, at least for the USA, today. We’ve known for almost 100 years that our soil is nutrient impoverished, and no longer provides plant foods with the mineral elements essential to human nourishment and health.Person Stuck in Maze

Isn’t this frustrating?  It seems there’s a brick wall at every turn.Brick Wall

There is an answer.Exit Maze

The answer lies in naturally occurring, full-spectrum, whole food extracts.  Food extracts can take the form of herbal supplements. These supplements  can be obtained by taking a nutrient-rich plant [from another location anywhere in the world], and removing the water and fiber, in a chemical-free vacuum process. This process captures the entire vitamin complex, intact, thus retaining its functional and nutritional value.

Caution: not all herbal supplements were created equal. Its very sad to say, some do not even meet the definition given above.

I only want to consider those supplements that are nutrient-rich and chemical-free. Of those, not every one is the right one to take, at the current time.

This feels like a cliffhanger.  I hear people Yelling from the Rooftops — “How the F… Am I Supposed to Know Which One to Take?”

I’m so glad you asked. Next time we’ll answer that question.

With knowledge comes responsibility.  Do you and your kids keep popping those synthetic vitamins, that you have on the kitchen counter?
